We Designed The Green House Model for 2010 Annual Conference, July 10-13 for The Council of La Raza Conference in San Antonio, Texas

General Notes:  All printed materials should be made with recycled paper or fabric with non-toxic ink.  All exhibition materials should be manufactured free of toxins, with low VOC's (Volatile Organic Compounds), and when possible use organic, re-engineered, re-used, and /or recyclable components.

Ideas—in each space there should be various real objects in exhibit for people to touch and experience.

The exhibit is for two types of people

• Those that rent an apartment in a building, a garden setting, or a home
• Those who live in their own homes and want to rehabilitate and update the design components

What can each person do to help reduce their carbon emissions and make their home healthier for themselves and their family?

•  Display how many very simple changes can be made to create a healthier home
• Showcase how many little simple changes can save money
• Such as changing the light bulbs from incandescent to fluorescent or LED,  which uses less electricity thus lowering the electric bill, and helps maintain a healthier planet for all

Renters can ask:

•  for Lead paint to be removed from their unit
•  to have low aerated faucets and shower heads installed in their units
•  for rugs with low VOCs, and non-toxic glue

 Most of the displays at the exhibition will be in banners with printed information and pictures, some will be actual eco-friendly consumer products, and virtual displays showcased on computers or via a flat screen television

Goals

• To communicate to grass roots individuals the contribution they can make through small changes in their homes—in this way they are creating a healthier environment for themselves and their family, while reducing their carbon footprint
• The “Green House” exhibition will showcase real materials with virtual educational materials
• Help prevent indoor pollutants
• People can use natural cleaners for washing clothes, cleaning dishes, and general household cleaning
• Renters could ask their landlords to paint their units with low VOC paints

 The Exhibit Area

The Architectural Drawing—the drawing has all the components of a house: walls, windows, furniture, some lighting

• Can be printed in a plasticize cloth to the actual size of 40’x40’ 30’x30’ for the interior spaces plus 10’of garden, pergola, shed, mechanical equipment, bins for: garbage and  recycling

Exhibit Components

• All exhibit components should be no larger than 4’x6’
• The architectural components for the construction of the exhibit will be made with model type of materials, which will be easy to assemble and dismantle
• All the material that will be used in the exhibition should be healthy, green, and if possible recycled
• Real Displays in picture frames (black) to showcase the examples of sustainable-green materials—when people visit the exhibit they can actually touch and see the materials
• Materials such as insulation foam (biodegradable), light weight wood
• plywood and  1”x2 “
• Sustainable  floors such as bamboo, tiles (2-12”x12”)
• 100% recycled and recyclable rubber tiles
• Carpet pieces 18”x18” made of recyclable materials
• Samples of low VOC paints can be applied to the surface of a piece of press-board  then  be framed for display
• All samples can be glued or screwed to wood and placed in the picture frame (18”x24”)
• The amount of green materials showcased in this fashion can be numerous

Living Room

• Display a small table with a lamp include fluorescent energy savings bulb
• Banner of plant that shows how photosynthesis purifies the indoor air by generating oxygen
• Any furniture can be displayed as long as it’s made with green materials, and can be placed on top of the floor plan
• The corner wall display which is constructed of 2 panels (4’x6’)is composed of biodegradable commercial insulating foam (with the company name covered)
• Showcase of 3 types of green insulation against the cold, heat and noise within corner wall display

 

Insulated Wall

• The insulated wall should be filled with
• jean insulation
• sprayed soy based polyurethane
• cotton insulation
• These insulation can be glued in between the foam to showcase to the public
• There can be a banner of graphics with information about the importance of insulation and why it should be implemented in the rehabilitation of your home or of the rented home.

 Window banner display

• Windows give natural ventilation
• The wall with the window should have a banner displaying a picture of a window with information about the types of insulted windows
• Explain R-rating
• Plastic insulation to cover window, inexpensive and works
• Include information about caulking (have examples of caulking materials which are green) and why it is essential to weatherize and insulate windows from cold and heat, and include the time of year to add caulking and remove it
• Natural Lighting—how windows allow the sun’s rays to fill the spaces giving humans needed vitamin D (person should be exposed directly to sunlight) which helps us maintain a healthy happy outlook
• Also lowers our electric bills because we do not need electric lighting when natural light comes into a space

Kitchen

• Display recycling bins
• Have aerated faucet display
• Counter top display made with recycled colored glass mixed with cement
• Display Green Cleaners
• Cloth kitchen towels
• Biodegradable paper towels
• Plants

Nursery

• Display fabrics (sheets, clothing, towels, cotton diapers) made out of organic materials
• Toys that do not have toxic materials
• Caulk flooring
• Biodegradable wipes/disposable diapers
