The Zero Energy Home was designed to seamlessly integrate numerous state of the art energy saving technologies with solar energy generation to produce a conventional looking home that would have a net annual energy consumption of zero.
The energy saving features implemented in the various aspects of the house are: Structure
Foundation Insulation
High Thermal Mass Walls
Radiant Heat Barrier under the Roof
R-38 Attic Insulation
Low Emissivity Windows
Overhangs and Patio Covers to reduce Solar Heat Gain into the house
HVAC
An Evaporative Condenser
Hydronic Heating
Air Distribution through the Conditioned Space
On Demand Tankless Water Heater
Solar Thermal:
Solar Water Heating
Solar Electric
Photovoltaic Electricity Generation
Lighting and Appliances:
Energy Star Appliances
Compact Fluorescent Lamps
You save money and improve performance when you take cost-effective measures that reduce building loads installing systems and appliances that are the right size to meet the reduced loads. In general, over sizing worsens performance and increases costs. The most effective strategy for improving household, business energy efficiency is to first target your building’s envelope (the walls, attic, windows, and doors). The next step is to reduce the energy consumption of systems, such as heating, cooling, lighting and appliances. Finally, consider clean energy generation (solar, geothermal, and so on).
